Life usually revolves around family commitments and more often than not there's insufficient time for holidays or simply not enough money. As people's lives become busier and busier, choosing a short city break is the preferred way to take a holiday these days.
Barcelona is not a large city and can easily be seen by foot, and the city actually has various walking tours to showing the best sights. Roads are lined with wide pathways and there are no steep hills to climb so getting about by walking is by far the most popular approach to view the attractions.
Numerous artists and sculptors are attracted to Barcelona and not only in modern times, historically many of them have left their presence on the city in the fascinating buildings and arty spaces. Museums showing the work of Picasso and Miro are appealing and you'll need lots of time to appreciate them fully.
Stretching from La Ramblas, including the old port of Barcelona and the Placa Catalunya, is the Barri Gotic where a whole day can be dedicated to exploring just this area. Roam around the warren of narrow walkways between the old buildings which lead to delightful courtyards, before taking a break in one of the open air cafes or lively tapas bars in the area.
Work began on the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in 1883 with Gaudi giving it his full attention until he died in 1926, the project remains unfinished and isn't expected to be complete until at least 2030 - anyone who has seen a Gaudi creation will agree he's the greatest Catalan architect there ever was.
