The dream of many travellers is to go to a land far away, to walk around, or drive around while they stay at their chosen place. These are things they want to do on their own; yet, they forget to do it once they are at there. Our family, however, did exactly that not too long ago.
Rather than allowing the regional fears rule our perceptions of Mexico (We went to Cancun), we dropped the Guide, we took a map and went out into the "wilds" of Cancun to actually see and feel the place for ourselves. We took buses, we walked on foot, we got lost various times, and finally, we realized that taking taxis was not only very cheap ($2.50 a ride anywhere in town), but fast, and efficient as well.
The taxi drivers were friendly, easy going, and very helpful people. They drive just like any Taxi in New York; however, we did alright and the whole family is still alive and well.
